Sound Walls Explained Research, Tips, and Tricks
Hey there, fabulous teachers! Ready to take your literacy instruction to the next level? Stick with me for this video all about sound walls.
I have had my sound wall up on the bulletin board behind me for quite some time now, and one comment I’ve been getting a lot lately is, tell me more about this sound wall! So, I thought I’d take a few minutes and talk to you about sound walls and let you know where you can get your hands on the one you see behind me.
First, whether your school has adopted a science-of-reading aligned reading curriculum or not, the research is clear on this; sound walls support literacy instruction. They can make a huge difference in your classroom, but choosing the right sound wall and incorporating it into your instruction isn’t as simple as printing and stapling.
So, in this video, I’ll share some information about how sound walls help literacy instruction, great tips and activities for using them in your instruction, and what to look for when choosing the sound wall that is best for your learners. Plus, stick around to find out how you can get your hands on the exact sound wall we’re using today. Let’s dive in!

Hello Ms. DiGilio! I love your channel. Are you familiar with Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Teaching? If so, do you agree with it? If so, do you have any support for teachers with Domain 3 4b? Thank you for your reply.

Why doesn’t your sound wall have an illustration? I am trying to understand how some sound walls include an illustration to each phoneme but yours does not. Hope you reply.

@@AnnaDiGilioSo sorry! I revisited the sound wall and did notice the illustration. Thank you. I noticed that the emphasis is in k-1 but I teach 4-5 graders who read at a 1st grade level and have never seen a sound wall. Do I follow the k-1. I am so confused on which kit to purchase. Thank you for taking time to reply.

Hi Ana, Could you discuss the differences between Lexile Levels and F&P? Reading levels have faced criticism, and I want to use a data-driven approach to assess children and accurately determine their reading abilities. How can this be achieved without relying on the flawed non-scientific leveling system?

Hi Ana, can you please talk a little bit about Lexile Levels vs F&P and the accuracy of leveling books. If I wanted to go by the SoR and not leveled books to determine how well a child reads how do I do that? How can I ensure that the child is performing at a satisfactory grade level without relying on the flawed leveling system, which is not based on scientific evidence to determine a child's reading ability?

I havent had any UFLI training yet, but the slides look boring. Do your slides match up at all? They were fabulous and my kids loved the routine.

I am a science of reading teacher in Australia and I can tell you that decodable texts are only for students who are still learning the basic code and use rich texts for story structure , vocabulary, and reading comprehension for all students. So science of reading is all about the 5 components - not just phonics. . See the Reading League for great ideas! Thanks for your great enthusiasm!
